When the evangelist Matthew seasoned his parable with mustard, the small grain had been on everyone’s lips for a long time. The Chinese cultivated mustard 3000 years ago. The field weed came to Greece via Asia Minor. In ancient Rome, doctors recommended mustard as an aphrodisiac. Or also against snake bite, hair loss, leprosy and lice. The Roman Columella noted the first known mustard recipe.
